An audit is a procedure used by the Canada revenue Agency to gather information about you and to determine if the information you provided was accurate. The CRA agent will ask for all evidence it feels is relevant to the information on your tax return. Typically they will request information from the taxpayer and sources related to the taxpayer (banks, deposit books, and cancelled cheques. Sometimes during an audit they might request a copy of your most recent accounts receivable list as well. The purpose of requesting a copy of your accounts receivable list is if you don't pay the tax that you owe they will contact your customers directly and order them to pay CRA directly. This will effectively put you out of business, It is this reason why you need an experienced tax litigator. Only a tax litigator can handle these proceedings. At the end of the audit, the Revenue agent will issue a letter outlining what has been disallowed. If no new evidence is provided an notice of reassessment will follow. You will now have 90 days to file a notice objection. Assuming a notice of objection is filed, an appeals officer will contact you and ask you to provide any additional information which was not presented during the audit. If the appeals officer confirms the notice of reassessment you will now have a further 90 days to file a notice of appeal and its off to tax court.
